2011 fashion: The 70’s glamour in ankara print

Have you being wondering what 2011 holds for the fashion industry? As No doubt, the fashion scene in 2010 has been quite eventful. Last year, we found inspiration in the old school styles of the 50s, 60s and 70s from shoes, bags, clothing to hair accessories.

Fashion shows held in different parts of the country by fashion designers who showed over the past few months took a lot of inspiration from the 70’s specifically, the trim, knee-length gown/ mini gown looks favour by style icons like Omotola Ekehinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke to mention but a few. So what might 2011 have in store for the fashionistas?

While some fashionistas are still living through the 2010 trends, some have caught up with the fashion trend for 2011 while others are yet to come across it.

Prince Akanni Oyetusi of Noble Afrik and the President of FADAN said 2011 will be an interesting year for the fashion industry.

‘Although the trend is yet to be determined but it is likely to be what we have been wearing, for at least the first quarter of the year. He added that the weather and the environment would be a major determinant of what the 2011 fashion trend would look like since we now have a climate change globally. Is it going to be another year of local fabric where Ankara will still be the queen of all fabrics that would be experimented with all manner of styles?.

“Local fabrics have to come stay. Today, we find out that at events, socials and parties, local fabrics are the order of the day. And the acceptance is spreading daily when compared to some years back when they are seen as the fabric for the downtrodden,” he said.

Akanni added that 2011 would be a year of improved a Ankara in texture, pattern and designs. According to him, “it is going to be a year of ankara and other local fabrics being tastefully mixed with western fabrics to produce trendy wears. He added that ladies designs and styles are going to get crazier like never before.

The projection of Bisola Isiaka of Labussy Creation for 2011 is similar to those of Noble Afrik. She said local fabrics like Davida, Vilsco, Ankara, Adire, Kampala, mixed Guinea brocade and lace fabric, lace and chiffon are the fabric is to watch out for in 2011.

“What people wear for the latter part of 2010 will determine the fashion trend from January till mid February, and what people are going to wear for the first quarter of this year will determine the trend for the year. There will be some changes in the second quarter of the year, as new styles would emerge”.

“But in all, it is going to be a year of African prints like we had it last year. We are going to see more of Ankara this year, more than any other fabric even more than the French and voile lace. Gone are the days that they are relegated to the background,” she said.

For shoes- The shoes shape of the 50s, 60s and 70s will make a strong return, with shapes that accentuate curves.

For bags- hand purse and crocodile/alligator skin bags are making a somewhat controversial return, spurred on by the trend of ’50s and ’60s dressing.

For jewelries – chandeliers, coral beads, loop, round and dangling ear and neck accessories.

Biker jacket

The military fashion trend has been with us for since the last quarters of 2010. And it is getting more prominent on and off the runway.

Tail hems- dresses longer at the back have been seen as an alternative to the mini skirt or maxi dress for sometime and for 2011 tail hems will continue their reign.
