Enugu residents turn cassava farmers over high garri price

Processed cassava flakes a.k.a "GARRI",is a popular west-african food, the most popular or one of the most popular foods in Nigeria for both the poor and rich.
Residents of Enugu, especially around the outskirts of the city, have embarked on cassava farming due to the high cost of “garri” in the market.

It is observed that many residents have begun to clear fallow plots of lands for cassava farming this cropping season.
Due to the rising cost of “garri”  , the people were
compelled to small scale farming to sustain their families.
A teacher, Mr Edwin Mba,cited the need for the citizens to engage in farming and produce some of the foods they consumed, adding that cassava remained the easiest and most reliable crop they could cultivate.
“We must all get back to the farm in order to sustain
our individual families or else, our children will all die of hunger,’’ he said.
A resident, Mrs Ijeoma Ugwu, said that she could no
longer afford to buy “garri” in large quantities because its price had spiralled from N700 to N1,200 per “paint rubber’’ container.
She, however, expressed the optimism that the situation would be better in 2018 since she had embarked on cassava farming
Cassava farming is known to generate a reasonable amount of income.
The small scale farming is no new trend since the Buhari regime, not just cassava, okro ,vegetable (ugwu),waterleaf, pawpaw, pepper, amongst others.
Whether for good or for bad, landowners are now going back to their unused piece of land(s).
Goodnews is, soon Garri and other cassava-related foods would be in circulation both in the market and in individual homes.
Badnews is the land cases will now continue to increase.
Which ever ways, Nigeria go survive.
